Acer palmatum Sumi Nagashi, also known as Japanese Maple, is a deciduous shrub. It has seven-lobed leaves that show off a variety of red shades throughout the year. They emerge as purple-red in Spring, before turning dark red throughout Summer and finishing up bright red in Autumn. It produces flowers in Spring, with the potential of winged fruit in Autumn. The plant is also a great space filler as it reaches an ultimate height and spread of 2.5 - 4m. Acers can be cared for with relative ease. Plant in an area of partial shade and aim to avoid long periods of exposure to full sunlight. They can tolerate most soil types, requiring you keep it moist, well-drained and ensure watering is kept to a regular, consistent level.
