Overview

Pick pounds of deliciously sweet and juicy strawberries from your own garden with the wonderfully tasty ‘Honeoye’, a leading variety that’s reliable and hardy – great for beginners and professionals alike.

This early variety starts cropping in late May or early June and continues for 3-4 weeks, producing a heavy crop of firm, bright red juicy berries with a wonderful flavour until July.

Scrumptious eaten fresh from the plant and also perfect for making your own jam, or you can freeze them to enjoy whenever you want.

‘Honeoye’ is ideal for growing in the ground, and great in hanging baskets or containers too – a 12in pot is large enough for around three runners.

Fully deserving its coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, you can be sure that this is a proven garden performer, guaranteed to be suitable for UK gardeners at every level of experience. You can therefore plant this in the garden with confidence.

The plants are supplied as bare root runners which are delivered in a dormant state having been held in cold storage. They are fully hardy and ready to be planted out straight away as long as there is no risk of frost.

Supplied as a pack of 20 bare root runners.

Care

Soak the runners in lukewarm water for a few hours before planting to give them the best start.

Strawberries should be planted out as soon as possible - only plant outdoors once all risk of frost has gone.
Plant in a sunny and sheltered position in fertile, free-draining soil. Poor soil can be improved by adding compost or well-rotted manure prior to planting.

Give your strawberries plenty of space. Dig a hole with a trowel big enough to take the roots of the plant. Plant them 45cm (18in) apart, leaving 75cm (30in) between rows - the crown should be level with the soil surface.

If you plant strawberries too deep, they might rot, but if you leave the crown protruding from the soil, the plant will dry out and die. Firm your plants in well and water thoroughly.

If you\'re planting into a basket, it\'s best to limit yourself to three or four strawberry plants in a 30cm (12in) basket. Add water-retaining granules and slow-release fertiliser into the compost before planting.

Check the compost daily in hot weather – water if the top half-inch of compost feels dry.

If growing strawberries in pots or hanging baskets, feed them every two weeks during the growing season with a balanced fertiliser. When flowering begins, switch to a high-potash liquid fertiliser to encourage good fruiting.

As the fruits develop, place dry straw or mulching fabric underneath to stop splashes blemishing the fruit.
